Background of the Study
Online code-switching, the practice of alternating between languages within digital conversations, is a common linguistic strategy in Nigeria’s multilingual society. This study examines how Nigerian users employ code-switching in WhatsApp and Facebook to navigate social and cultural boundaries. The fluidity of digital communication on these platforms encourages speakers to blend indigenous languages with English to convey nuanced meanings and establish social identity (Adetayo, 2023). WhatsApp, known for its private and immediate messaging, often displays spontaneous and context-driven language shifts, while Facebook posts may exhibit more deliberate and public code-switching patterns. These practices reflect users’ attempts to negotiate identity, express cultural pride, and adapt to the communicative demands of each platform. The study investigates the frequency, contexts, and linguistic features of online code-switching, providing insights into how technology influences language practices. Moreover, it examines the socio-cultural factors that encourage or constrain code-switching in Nigerian digital discourse, thus offering a comprehensive understanding of how language evolves in the digital era (Okafor, 2024). By documenting these trends, the study contributes to the broader literature on bilingualism and digital communication.

Statement of the Problem
Despite its prevalence, online code-switching in Nigerian social media has not been thoroughly studied. The differences in code-switching patterns between private messaging platforms like WhatsApp and public forums like Facebook remain underexplored. This gap in research limits our understanding of how digital communication mediates language use and identity formation. The study aims to address this by comparing code-switching practices on both platforms and identifying the factors that influence these linguistic behaviors (Adeniji, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the patterns of online code-switching in Nigerian WhatsApp and Facebook posts.

  • To analyze the socio-cultural factors influencing code-switching practices.

  • To evaluate the impact of code-switching on digital identity and communication.

Research Questions

  • What are the prevalent code-switching patterns on WhatsApp and Facebook in Nigeria?

  • How do socio-cultural factors affect online code-switching practices?

  • What impact does code-switching have on digital identity and user interaction?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a detailed comparative analysis of online code-switching in Nigerian social media. The findings will offer insights into bilingual communication in digital spaces, contributing to academic literature and informing digital communication strategies for educators and media practitioners (Nwankwo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing online code-switching in Nigerian social media posts on WhatsApp and Facebook. It does not extend to other platforms or offline language practices.

Definitions of Terms

  • Code-Switching: The practice of alternating between languages within a conversation.

  • WhatsApp: A messaging platform used for private and immediate communication.
